The Singer Featherweight

April 20, 2012

A few months ago, I received an invitation to join the Sew Out Loud designers on Flickr.

At the time, I was completely swamped and just couldn’t see how on earth I could participate.

So time went on and the group got started, and the most amazing designs began to emerge every week:

This is my favorite, designed by Amy:

And I must say I adore this one designed by Charise:

And then I noticed an open design challenge portion of the sew-a-long. Sewing and Wordplay was the theme and is to be judged by the infamous Suzuko Koseki none the less! Suddenly my brain went into overdrive, and I drew this:

I’ve been wanting to play around with the idea of using letters to create the shape of something, and well this was just the inspiration I needed. (never mind that I was still unbelievably swamped)

So today, I finally sat down at my computer and whipped up the pattern.

It’s paper pieced, and I would rate it advanced due to the number of little sections you need to sew together. All of the letters, the needle holder and the ends of the spool are embroidered.

I debated about whether I should keep it for sale, and in the end I decided to join the fun and add my pattern to the group! Since I design patterns for a living, I’m officially withdrawing myself from any prize drawings. I love the designs already submitted and I’m curious to see who gets picked!

Now I don’t have time to actually sew this up, so be on the lookout for any mistakes!

Edited to add: I found some mistakes! I’ve corrected them and updated the Pattern link below. The new file is called The Singer Featherweight Pattern 2

And be sure to post photos of your block to the Sew Out Loud Flickr Group!

Sonja, this is so fabulous. i’m sure you’ll see a multitude of sewing machine covers made using it! maybe i’ll make my sister a sewing tote – she found her featherweight at an spca thrift store in vancouver – can you believe it?!

also, i was slightly offended on your behalf that you won’t one of the designers for the qal! the blocks are all so awesome, i thought you should have been included! i’m mollified by the fact that you were invited. 😉

Hey Sonja – this is SO COOL! You know I love my featherweight, so I’m totally making this. I left a question on flickr, but looking more at the pattern I have another question. All of the letters are reversed, but the pieces for section Fa and Fb are not reversed. Is that right? I can figure that out, but thought I’d mention it for others – let me know if I’m out of my mind.

Hey Krista, so I’ve double checked the pattern and Fa and Fb are reversed, and correct. Fa is attached to the right side of Fb. Let me know if you need any help ok? You got my number 🙂

Okay, comment 6 years later. I LOVE this featherweight pattern. I was wondering if you had considered revamping to include thread and needle as paper pieced?

  17. September 26, 2018 3:22 pm

Well, the scale of the thread is quite small, and I can’t stand the thought of people cursing my name as they slowly go blind sewing that up! 😂
